Theater Floor Construction

Enough of the couch on cinderblocks, it was time to build the raised floor and give my home theater Stadium Seating. Thursday, Dec 30, 1999, Burr and I went out and got the lumber, then on the weekend of Jan 8, I installed most of the 2x12 framing. Here, the main piece of framing Main framework ready to slide into place is ready to slide into place thus. Major framework in place The portion on the right isn't yet fastened into place. The next weekend Burr and I finished off the framing Finished framework and the 3/4" plywood decking. Ready for the finish work First, though, I thought it would be fun to stash a "time capsule" Time Capsules in one of the cubby holes the framing left. Time capsules stashed away The plywood decking was then glued and screwed Time capsules stashed away to the framing. Whoever takes it apart will curse me and my ancestors to the beginning of time, but I'll bet it won't be squeaking during the movies! After we finished, Burr put the new construction to good use. The "time capsule" is made up of two containers: a large Rubbermaid box and a "Brinks Fire Safe". The latter was on sale for $18, so who knows how good it is, but I thought I'd put some of the "more likely to be interesting to people of the future" stuff in there "just in case", since it was so cheap. Most of the magazines wouldn't fit, however, so I used the large plastic box for them. It has a tight seal, so it should be protected even from a flood.

The contents are:

There was supposed to be the Oregonian Millenium t-shirt also, but it ran off and hid. I'm still not sure where it went off to. A Computer Bits, and a shrink-wrapped FreeBSD 1.1 CDROM set also hid while I was boxing things up; I found them skulking in my bedroom after the floor had already been sealed up.

The final work, TBD, is to have a hardwood "landing" tread laid along the front edge of the step, then carpet the deck and riser. Rope lighting will be mounted uner the lip of the landing tread to provide non-intrusive indirect lighting while the movie is playing.
This has been done, save the rope lighting didn't work out as well as I would have liked (I planned to screw the clips into the Brazilian Cherry stepboard underside, but that stuff is hard! The rope lighting is currently stuffed into the split between the two pieces of carpet at the base.
